This was my first attempt in Zbrush. Meats Meier and Alex Alvarez had urged me to get into Zbrush when Meats invited me to visit Gnomon (where they teach and produce instructional DVD's for the CG industry), so I finally took the plunge to really learn it (Alex even gave me a bunch of Gnomon DVD's to get me up to speed). Zbrush is definitely a very interesting and powerful tool for detailed organic modeling. Doing a face like this in conventional modeling apps would take far longer and not nearly as intuitive. Sculpting in Zbrush with a tablet feels so much like painting that you don't get the same hypnotic zen factor of pulling vertices around.
