All these years, I’ve read about how X-COM: UFO Defense is one of the best (if not the best) games ever made, and I’ve always wanted to try it. Well, I did, for a couple of days, and while I could see why it’s got such a special place in the hearts of gamers, I regretably can’t say that it ensnared my heart as it did others. I’m not sure if it’s because too much time has passed and what I expect from video games in general is not the same as it once was back in the mid-90’s, or if maybe I’m just not a UFO Defense kinda guy. While it’s true that I’m typically not into strategy games, I do enjoy hybrid games with strategic elements. I guess the presentation of the game is just too dated at this point for me to be totally immersed. It’s like how some classic films stand the test of time and I could get immersed in them easily, while other classic films become more or less a lesson in film history. Anyway, I wanted to love UFO Defense, but as things stand, my life-changing game is still Half-Life.
